Animation is immediately captivating. By hand-creating a world that’s fully saturated with color, animation draws in and holds the eye better than traditional film, which has evolved in medium that our senses have learned to tune out thanks to the thousands of commercials and print ads we see (but don’t absorb) every day.
So, given animation’s ability to stand out in a crowd, how can you channel this and make it work for your business? Well, that’s where we can help. And the first start is knowing what you’re dealing with.
There are three main types of animation, and each can immediately convey a different sentiment about your business — and we’re about to break all of that down for you, one by one.
The 3 Basic Types of Animation
The basic types of animation are cel, stop and computer animation. These three types of animation are a primary key for complete animation effect.
Cel animation refers to the most traditional type of animation, the kind that you’re probably most familiar with — a set of hand drawings. Think Disney, The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, etc.
In the cel process, various pictures are created that are slightly different but progressive in nature. You basically have a main character, and draw them several times in slightly different poses. When all of these drawings are merged, you have a living, breathing character ready to move anywhere you dream. Backgrounds can also be added to cel animations for a fully animated effect. Once you’ve drawn exactly what you want, you use your camera to photograph the drawings, and this becomes your animation.
Cel animations are ideally paired with whimsical and lighthearted brands. Children’s clothing retailers, interior designers and fabric softener manufacturers are just a few examples of businesses that would be ideal for incorporating cel animation.
Stop animation or stop motion animation is a technique to make objects move on their own. Here, a few images are drawn (or molded, as we’ve seen in a few recent clay-mation movies) with some different positions and photographed separately. These photographs are then strung together for a slightly choppy yet easy-to-follow animation. If you’ve ever seen King Kong, The Curse of the Were-Rabbit and nearly ALL of Tim Burton's films, you’ve seen stop animation!
So what types of businesses and brands can benefit the most from stop animation? Well, we tend to lean towards more contemporary B2C businesses for stop animation, with a target audience of trendy early adopters. Clothing manufacturers and retailers would be a great fit for stop animation videos, as would certain grocers or restaurants that lean towards seasonal and sustainable branding, which is very big right now across all verticals.
Computer animation is the latest (and greatest) technique that includes 2D and 3D animation. This method not only enhances the hand-drawn animations mentioned above, but also incorporates a new and amazing tool that gives artists like us new levels of control: the computer.
When working in the computer animation field (where you can create just about anything your heart desires), it’s important to remember that there are two dimensions in which you’re working:
-2D Animation: This dimension is used through Powerpoint and Flash animations. Though its features are similar to cel animation, 2D animation has become popular due to simple application and easy transfer of a business logo for motion.
-3D Animation: Used in filmmaking and advanced advertising, 3D animation manipulates objects or characters that are not easy to display. Use of 3D animation can create a crowd of people, to a full sized city or full detailed view of a product being sold. There are different shapes, support of mathematical codes, display of actions and colors which are mind-blowing as if copied from an actual picture!
If you want your business to be state-of-the-art and be part of the growing technological advancement of advertising, then both 2D and 2D computer animation is for you and your business!
The above mentioned 3 types of animations have brought a new era of amazing technology in the field of Internet (website design and graphics), film industry and media.
